Israel faces a critical challenge: 80% of the calories consumed in the country are imported, primarily from Turkey and Ukraine. With farms in the North and the Gaza envelope at risk of abandonment, the country’s borders—and its food security—are under threat. HaShomer, Israel’s largest volunteer organization, is taking bold action to address this crisis.
This year alone, HaShomer has mobilized an unprecedented 280,000 volunteers—nearly triple its usual numbers—to keep Israel’s fields productive amid a disappearing Thai and Palestinian agricultural workforce. But the challenge doesn’t end there. HaShomer’s vision is ambitious: to achieve national food independence and position Israel as a global leader in food security, capable of feeding its own people and fostering regional stability by exporting food to neighbors like Egypt and Jordan.
Realizing this vision requires more than manpower. It demands ingenuity, innovation, and investment in transformative agricultural solutions. HaShomer’s immediate relief efforts and long-term infrastructure projects have already earned recognition, including Israel’s prestigious 2024 President’s Award for Volunteerism. But we need your help to take this mission to the next level.
