Help build the first synagogue in Shlomit (Southern Israel on the border with Gaza & Egypt)
Adat Yeshurun
Adat Yeshurun
The Shlomit community was built in 2011 in the vast sands of Halutza, located in the western Negev desert 7 km north of the Gaza Strip and a few hundred meters east of the Egyptian border. Shlomit is part of a national plan to strengthen and enhance Israel’s security by creating territorial continuity of towns along the borders of Israel with the Gaza Strip and Egypt.
Despite the challenges associated with living in this area (security risks, few employment options, and more), 70 young, idealistic families have already purchased plots of land to build their homes in Shlomit. These 70 courageous families all share a common desire to live and breathe the Zionist vision every day.
Officially approved urban building plans for 500 families and an additional 1000 families aim to make Shlomit the biggest community in the Eshkol Regional Council. As Shlomit becomes a residential attraction for the entire area, it will help the region offer more jobs and industries.
On October 7th, 2023, our lives and all of Am Yisrael changed forever. We woke up to a barrage of rockets, hearing them crash to the ground while we hid in bomb shelters with our children. The Shlomit Security Team received a call from a member of the nearby community of Pri Gan. He was in his bomb shelter with his family, and seven Hamas terrorists were outside of his home.
Nine of our brave security forces went to Pri Gan without hesitation and saw a community completely unprotected and helpless. Our men faced twelve terrorists who came to slaughter our people. We battled fiercely for two hours. Tragically, two of our dear friends and brothers, along with two others who were on their way to help, were killed, and four were injured. These heroes saved the lives of hundreds of people from the community of Pri Gan, along with the entire Shalom region.
Four mothers became widows. Fifteen children lost their fathers.
We are determined to have their memories live on and show the world that the people of Israel are stronger than ever. We will rebuild our community and build this synagogue so their memories will forever be a blessing.
Shlomit has dedicated the past decade to establishing the community and inherently protecting the border by living there. We have now reached the stage of developing and building much-needed public buildings.
We are currently in the process of building a community center to serve the needs of all the neighboring communities. Plans to build sports facilities and a community clubhouse are at different stages. Shlomit’s educational institutes are partially built and are already active. We look forward to filling the buildings with happy children once again.
We are blessed with positive growth in our community. However, we need a synagogue - a sacred place of prayer, worship, education and community. Our vision is an impressive, welcoming building which will be used by the entire community. The synagogue will host daily, Shabbat and holiday prayers, various special occasions such as B’nei Mitzvah celebrations, and holidays such as Rosh Hashanah, Purim and Independence Day.
The synagogue will also be a place of study. It will be open and active every day. It will be a place for the community members to gather for the purpose of strengthening ourselves and community ties.
The synagogue in Shlomit will illustrate our spirit of unity and harmony and love for all Jewish people. The sense of togetherness is deeply important to our community. The synagogue will consist of three areas, 555 individual seats, a quarter of them for the women’s section. A Torah library will be built in the synagogue as well as Torah study rooms. A kosher kitchen with all necessary facilities and accessibility will be included.
JNF is proud to partner with Congregation Adat Yeshurun, a growing Orthodox shul in La Jolla, California, dedicated to fostering a vibrant and inclusive community.
At this existential moment for Israel and the worldwide Jewish community, Adat Yeshurun, in addition to their annual campaign needs, was also driven to do something meaningful for a like community in Israel. In an inspiring display of solidarity and commitment, Adat Yeshurun is assisting Shlomit in building their much-needed synagogue. This new synagogue will serve as a place of worship and a cornerstone for the community, providing a space for education, cultural activities, and communal gatherings.
It is the sincere hope of the Rabbi and community of Adat Yeshurun that through our partnership with JNF, we can further amplify our impact. We encourage all individuals, congregations, and community organizations to help us raise the $3.5M needed to complete the project. Adat Yashurun has raised $200,000.
We invite you to join us in supporting this vital project, helping to ensure a bright future for Shlomit and their congregation. Please join us. Together, we can make a significant difference in the lives of our Israeli family living with such inspirational determination, courage and passion in the Gaza envelope.
